Panel 1: Man: I can't believe this is your final math comic. The frosh don't even know who you are. The mathematician: I never got to write about power series, primes, unique factorization, quadratic reciprocity, proofs by contradiction… Panel 2: The mathematician (voice-over): …conic sections, finite fields, manifolds, ergodic theory, alternating groups, von Neumann neighborhoods, cyclotomic polynomials, and lots of other topics that no other comic would touch. But it's time to retire. and all I feel like this finale is really missing is a sense of closure. Panel 3: On the blackboard: Ē ≡ smallest S s.t. E ⊂ S, S closed The mathematician: That's better. Panel 4: The mathematician: Well, besides set closure, there's also algebraic closure, reflexive closure, and transitive closure.
Nowadays I'm supposed to be the one making the new math and engineering discoveries. That's hard. I suddenly remember why I haven't updated since 2008.
